OVERVIEW

This two day portrait painting course will present you with the fundamentals of representational portrait painting focusing on tonal values, composition, form, colour theory, mixing and mark making.

The subject will be a female model. The aim will be to understand the the underlying basic skills of painting. We will start with drawing exercises led by Louise in oil and dry pastels on paper. These exercises will warm us up in preparation for painting. We will then start our paintings on canvas boards working from a live model. The course is suitable for beginners and those looking to improve with students taught largely on a one to one basis with the tutor coming around to each person teaching to their level and helping them overcome any obstacles that arise.

Louise will share with students the process by which she paints and offer some short demonstrations at different stages to illustrate what she is teaching to the group. The course includes advice on studio practice such as how to set yourself up at home or in studio time here with the right brushes, paints and setting out your palette with practical exercises over the three days. This indoor course takes place in the beautiful period Neukölln attic studio. All drawing materials, brushes, supports and paint will be supplied by Burnt Sienna.

Suffocating forms - Alice Morey workshop

We are excited and honoured to announce a winter workshop from international artist Alice Morey. Morey is a London and Berlin- based interdisciplinary artist, with an MA from Chelsea College of Art, London and is represented by Lehmann + Silva gallery in Porto.

This workshop is for those artists and enthusiasts who are interested in developing sculptural work; building a connection to the 2D and 3D through making with the hands. It is a unique opportunity to develop new skills or further develop your craft working alongside an international contemporary artist.

Despite the unique nature of this workshop no experience is necessary, it is open to anyone who wants to have fun with materials, play and experiment.

This two part workshop with Alice Morey involves collecting various found objects and materials from markets and unusual places in Berlin (Turkish shops in Neukolln / asian markets / 99 cent shop) to then combine them together ( glue / tie them) in abstract forms, dipping them and molding them into sculptures using plaster, wire and colours

Artist Residency

Jesse Leroy Smith

15th February - 15th March 2020

‘The Inhabitants’

Artist, curator, mentor and collaborator Jesse Leroy Smith will be working at the Burnt Sienna studio for one month from the 15th of February until 15th of March 2020.  The school environment is the ideal site for him to create new work in a city that means so much to him. Gathering together his drawings made on the U Bahn, trams and in museums with found materials and contributions from students and visitors, he will amass a bank of visual ‘evidence’. This wall or screen will be animated by collage, typography and painterly edits. Whether it resolves into an immersive arcade of images or a singular icon, an abstract tapestry or a processional banner will depend on everyone involved.
